Malcolm Brinded studied engineering at Churchill College in the 1970s – then joined Shell as an offshore platform design engineer in Borneo. He spent 38 years at Shell, running oil and gas development projects in the UK and Netherlands, running business units in Oman and the UK, becoming Shell UK Chair and then joining the Shell Board in 2002, where he ran upstream exploration and production globally for ten years.
He is passionate about tackling both the climate AND access-to-energy emergencies, about African development, and in promoting STEM among young people.
He has latterly been a Non-Exec Director on the Boards of BHP. Network Rail and CH2M, chairing their respective Sustainability/HSE Committees. He has been Chair of the Shell Foundation (delivers access to energy in Africa and India); Engineering UK (promoting STEM outreach and engineering to schools across the UK); the Energy Institute (a global institute for energy professionals); and the Royal Academy of Engineering Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation.
He has been a UK Prime Minister’s Business Ambassador; and a member of the China Council on Environment and Development; the Shanghai Mayor’s Business Advisory Council; the Nigerian President’s Honorary International Investor Council.
He is a serial angel investor/advisor in start-ups, mostly focused on the low carbon economy.
